The Dangerous Gospel of Blind Obedience: Why African Christians Must Know Jesus For Themselves To Avoid Being Deceived

THE DANGEROUS GOSPEL OF BLIND OBEDIENCE: Why African Christians Must Know Jesus For Themselves To Avoid Being Deceived

Every generation has its own false teachers and false prophets. Every generation has its own pastor who tells his people to die for God, and every generation has its own crowd who believes him.

Today, the name of Pastor Paul Mackenzie of Kenya is trendy for a bad reason. It happened in a place called Shakahola forest. The victims are over 190 children and hundreds of adults who starved themselves to death, believing they were fasting to meet Jesus. When he was brought to court, his defence was simple and chilling: "I did not force anyone to fast."

He did not need to force anyone. He only needed to convince them that God said so. He only needed to convince them that to question him was to question God. And that is the most dangerous weapon in the hands of a false teacher.

This problem is beyonf one man in Kenya. It is the problem of blind obedience, of Christians who do not know Jesus for themselves, of churches where the pastor has replaced the Bible, and of a generation that follows miracles, prophecies, and fear instead of truth.

If we do not address this problem now, Shakahola will happen again. It has happened before. It is happening now in different forms in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. And it will happen in the future, with a new name, a new forest, and a new set of victims, unless African Christians return to the Bible.

The Problem is When The Pastor Becomes The Bible

In many African churches today, the pastor is no longer a teacher of the Word. He has become the Word itself. His words are treated as final. His dreams are treated as law. His prophecy is treated as the voice of God. To disagree with him is to be called a rebel, a witch, or a person without faith.

This is why a pastor can tell a woman to surrender her first salary as tithe, and she will do it. He can tell a man to roll on the ground, and he will do it. He can tell a sick person to throw away his drugs and use anointing oil as medicine, and he will do it. He can tell a couple to divorce because he had a revelation, and they will do it. He can tell parents to fast for 100 days, and they will starve their children.

The pastor does not need to force anyone. The system has already been built to make obedience automatic. The people have been taught that faith means never asking questions. They have been taught that if you question the man of God, God will punish you. They have been taught that suffering is a sign of spirituality, and the more you suffer, the closer you are to God.

But that is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That is the gospel of manipulation. The Bible never teaches that a Christian must surrender his mind to another man. The Bible teaches that every Christian must know God for himself.

What The Bible Actually Says

God foresaw this problem and warned us in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. He did not leave us without a test to know a true prophet from a false one.

In the Old Testament, God said if a prophet comes and performs a sign, and it even comes to pass, but he tells you to follow other gods, do not listen to him. He said in Deuteronomy 13, you shall not hearken to the words of that prophet. In Jeremiah 23, God said the false prophets speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. In Ezekiel 13, He said woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing.

In the New Testament, Jesus warned us directly. In Matthew 7, He said beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. In Matthew 24, He said false Christs and false prophets shall arise and show great signs and wonders, so much that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. The Apostle Peter said in 2 Peter 2, there shall be false teachers among you who will bring in damnable heresies. John said in 1 John 4, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

And the Bereans, in Acts 17, gave us the model. They received the word with readiness of mind, but they searched the Scriptures daily to see whether those things were so. If they searched Paul's teaching, who is your pastor that you cannot search his teaching? Paul himself said in Galatians 1, even if an angel from heaven preaches another gospel, let him be accursed.

The Bible is the standard. The pastor is not the standard. The miracle is not the standard. The crowd is not the standard. The Bible is the standard.

This Has Happened Before, And It Is Happening Now

Mackenzie is not the first, and if we are not careful, he will not be the last. In 1978, in Jonestown, Guyana, Jim Jones told his followers that the world was evil and they must drink poison to go to heaven. More than 900 people died, including children. He told them it was an act of faith. It was murder.

In 2000, in Kanungu, Uganda, the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments told its followers that the world would end and they must prepare to meet Jesus. More than 700 people died in a fire in their church. They had been told to fast, to sell their properties, and to obey the leaders without question.

In the early church, men like Montanus claimed to be the new mouthpiece of the Holy Spirit, and told people to abandon their families and fast until death. The Church rejected them because their teachings were not in the Scriptures.

In Africa today, the same spirit is at work in different clothes. We have prophets who tell women with HIV to stop taking their drugs because the anointing oil has healed them. We have pastors who tell people to use holy water as eye drops, to use aprons as shields against attack, and to use red candles to break curses. We have pastors who prophesy whom you should marry, whom you should divorce, who is behind your setbacks, and who is a witch in your family. We have pastors who demand first salary, first fruit, seed sowing, and special offerings for every blessing. We have pastors who tell members to leave their parents, leave their jobs, and isolate themselves in camps.

These are not small problems. They are the seeds of the next Shakahola. Today it is oil and water. Tomorrow it is fasting to death. Today it is a seed offering. Tomorrow it is selling your house to follow the prophet to the forest.

Why African Christians Are Especially Vulnerable

African Christians are not vulnerable because they are foolish. They are vulnerable because they are sincere, spiritual, and trusting. We believe in the supernatural. We believe God speaks. We believe in miracles. And that is good.

But our sincerity has been exploited by greed and ignorance. Many of us were not taught how to study the Bible for ourselves. We were taught to respect the pastor, to honour the man of God, and to never question authority. In our culture, questioning an elder is seen as disrespect. So we transfer that culture to the church, and we call it faith.

We have also made poverty and suffering a part of our spirituality. We believe that if you are suffering, God is testing you. So when a pastor tells you to suffer more, you think it is spiritual. But Jesus said His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He did not say you must suffer to prove your love for Him. He suffered for you.

The devil does not need to destroy the African Church with persecution from outside. He can destroy it from inside by giving us pastors who use our respect, our fear, and our desire for miracles to control us.

The Biblical Guideline To Avoid The Next Tragedy

If we want to avoid the next Shakahola, we must return to the Bible. There is no other protection.

First, put the Bible above the pastor. If the pastor contradicts the Bible, follow the Bible. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, as 2 Timothy 3 says. The pastor must be judged by the Bible, not the Bible by the pastor.

Second, test every prophecy and every spirit. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5, prove all things and hold fast that which is good. A prophecy is not true because it is loud. A miracle is not from God because it is dramatic. The fruit matters more than the noise. Jesus said in Matthew 7, you shall know them by their fruits.

Third, remember that Jesus alone is your mediator. In 1 Timothy 2, the Bible says there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. You do not need a pastor to reach God. You can pray for yourself. You can read the Bible for yourself. You can hear God for yourself.

Fourth, never obey a pastor above common sense, above your doctor, and above the wisdom God gave you. God gave doctors wisdom. To throw away your drugs because a pastor said so is not faith. It is foolishness. The Bible says in Proverbs 3, trust in the Lord with all your heart, and be not wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and depart from evil. True faith does not destroy your health.

Fifth, run from any church that isolates you. If a pastor tells you to cut off your family, to leave your job, to abandon your parents, or to go to a forest or camp alone, that is a red flag. God does not isolate His people to control them. He puts them in families and communities for protection.

Sixth, protect the children. Jesus said in Matthew 18, whosoever shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. A child cannot choose to fast to death. A child cannot choose to be sacrificed for a prophecy. Any pastor who uses children to prove his power is a destroyer.

Seventh, watch the money. A true man of God does not use fear to collect money. He does not sell blessings. He does not tell you that if you do not pay, you will die. The Bible says in 1 Peter 5, feed the flock of God, not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind. If the pastor is always after your salary, your house, and your offering, be careful.

Conclusion

My brothers and sisters, the Shakahola forest is not just in Kenya. It is in every church where people have stopped reading the Bible for themselves. It is in every home where a woman is afraid to question her pastor. It is in every family where a man will starve his children because a prophet said God told him.

Mackenzie said, "I did not force anyone." And in a sense, he is telling the truth. He did not force them with a gun. He forced them with a twisted Bible, with fear, and with blind obedience. And they died willingly.

But we can break this cycle. We can helped many people break free from these dungeons. Sadly, many others are still deeply entangled. Many have already paid with their lives. Others are still standing in the queue of destruction. Do not be the next one.

Stop worshipping men. Start worshipping Christ. Stop following the pastor's voice. Start following the voice of Jesus in the Scriptures. Stop saying, "My pastor said." Start saying, "The Bible says."

If your pastor is angry when you ask questions, he is hiding something. A true man of God will rejoice when you study the Bible like the Bereans. Know Jesus for yourself. Know the truth for yourself. Test all spirits. Run from false prophets. Protect your children. Protect your health. Protect your family.

Your life is too precious to be used as a sacrifice for another man's greed. The next Shakahola is coming if we do not wake up. Let it not find you in the queue. Share this. Save a life.
